I mean we all had our suspicions but StarFox Direct from nowhere blew everything out of the water holy shit! I do have the money set aside for a Switch2 so I guess I'll be doing that sooner than later.

and maybe I'll get Elore's Bogus Journey while I'm at it?

I so hope Jeannelle M. Ferreira's A Remarkable Rake will be published one day! It and Rose Lerner's The Girl in the Cellar are the historical romances I'm most looking forward to reading!

The first episode of the GL Thai drama Love Beyond Dreams was awesome! After Lené (some sort of spy?) gets assassinated, Ran goes back into the past to save her life.

I'm so happy Aya is getting a full GL. <3 I loved her in Wedding Plan and Love Sea (both were BL with secondary GL). I don't know Mie yet, but she seems great too.

It's available on iQiyi.

1. What are you currently reading?

  • Dawning vol. 2 by ICE: enjoying this vaguely toxic BL danmei. When I saw reviewers say it has Wangxian vibes (despite being modern) I'll admit I was little "people compare to the one danmei they've read, huh" but no it actually does kinda have Wangxian vibes, tho Li Luo is much more self-aware about his feelings than Wei Wuxian ever could dream of being. Both these idiots need to use their words.
  • still picking away at DMBJ vol. 2, of course.
  • no progress on CMoS 18. I've just been exhausted.

2. What have you recently finished reading?

  • Dawning vol. 1 by ICE
  • Do You Really Only Want a Meal? vol. 1 and 2 by Yasu Tadano: kinda flat modern BL about a guy dating his boss's son. Nothing bad happens at all, which is often okay but here it just felt one note, and also I just at no point could figure out what the boss's son liked about the guy. He just kinda. Decided he'd like him. And that was that.
  • Gachiakuta vol. 4 by Kei Urana: I don't know what it is about the art style, pacing, and writing that makes me feel like I never have any damn idea what's going on in this manga.
  • A Gentle Noble's Vacation Recommendation vol. 10 by Misaki
  • Witch Hat Atelier vol. 14 by Kamome Shirahama: oh man this volume was so good.
  • Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen vol. 1 by Kamome Shirahama and Hiromi Sato: I'll own it was probably unfair of me to read this seeing as how I didn't expect to like it and it was exactly how I expected it to be. For all that, I actually liked it better than I usually like stuff like this, which isn't saying much, but I'm at least gonna read another vol.

3. What will you read next?

Novels: Dawning, vol. 3, which is the last volume. After I finish that I need to buckle down on...

Graphic novels (physical): still Rebis: Born and Reborn by Carlotta Dicataldo and Irene Marchesini. I've got a really big library pile from the library and I've got to read and return them, it's not fair to hoard this many new queer graphic novel releases.

Graphic novels (digital): Yuri Espoir vol. 4 is due in 5 days, so I guess that.

Any idea how to get non-sideloaded ebook thumbnails to show up on Kindle Fire?

Some of the ones for books I bought on Amazon are suddenly showing blank placeholder images on collection previews (the larger thumbnails that appear when I open a collection folder seem fine). The thumbnails for my sideloaded fanfic show up fine so far.

ETA: the same thumbnails on my phone's kindle app look fine

Holy shit! Myst & Riven remakes are coming to PS5, with a PSVR2 version!

Myst is one of my favourite games of all time! I played it back in the 90s, & it remains awesome. Nice to see it coming to PlayStation finally (the shitty port of the og version does not count), & this remake looks stunning. But what I'm most excited about is Riven, because for nearly 30 bloody years I have been constantly cockblocked from playing this game. Seriously.

I missed it when it first came out, & couldn't find it in any local game shops when I tried looking (I have a distinct memory of asking some guy working in one if they had it in stock & him sneering, "That's an old game!" when it was just a few years old wtf).

Then in the late 2000s I got a boxed set of all 5 games. And Riven was incompatible with Windows 7. Ironically, Myst ran fine, despite technically being an older game, as they used the Masterpiece Edition, which was newer. Games 3-5, which were more modern, ran fine (though I never finished 3, & 4 & 5 were shit). Annoyingly, I did some investigating, & apparently there were two versions of Riven. One was *slightly* updated & was supposedly compatible with Windows XP, & likely would run fine on Windows 7, & one wouldn't work on anything beyond Windows 98. Guess which one they included?

A few years pass, & we're in the early 2010s now, & the Myst games come to GOG, including Riven, & the listing claimed it to be compatible with modern hardware. Well that was a fucking lie. I tried it on my PC running Windows 7. I tried it on a virtual machine running Windows XP. I think I even tried it on my laptop running Windows 8, because why the hell not. Compatibility issues a-go-go. Even in XP I barely made it a few minutes between crashes.

A decade passes, & news comes of a remake. But it's for the PC. And while I technically have a PC, it's a Surface Go 2, which isn't exactly a gaming powerhouse.

However, not long after, I learned that Myst (specifically the realMyst version with upgraded graphics) & Riven were available on Android. I could play Myst on my phone! Truly, the future. However, the downside was that this meant trying to play these games, which relied on small details, on a small screen. That was fine with Myst, as I've played it enough over the years that I know what I'm doing. But with Riven, I'm left squinting at an unfamiliar game on a screen smaller than the game ever expected you to be playing it on. I did give a brief try at connecting my phone to my PC & playing the game on that, via my phone. But phone to PC connection was in early days at that point, & the 'app screen' was still pretty small. I meant to make some effort at trying again at some point, possibly using Samsung DeX, which would require purchasing a special dock, though might be worth it. But I never quite got around to it.

But soon, my waiting might actually end! Possibly. No point counting chickens yet, considering how a lot of game releases go these days, & how bad the original PlayStation ports were.

Definitely sad I no longer have my PSVR2. That would be an awesome way to play these games!

Went to see this, & loved it. It was so funny & sweet. And they did a great job with the mystery - I did not figure it out.

Apparently it's based on a book (according to a friend who read it in the original German years ago). It looks like the first & second books in the series are available in English, so I'll have to give them a go. There's a third, but it just came out in German a few weeks ago, so I guess I'll have to wait for the translation.

Probably should feel bad for the lamb & mint pasty I had to eat afterwards though oops

Update from the Monday to-do list: No Phone Night was glorious. I hadn't realized how much work anxiety was bleeding into my evenings until I made a point of not letting the emails find me. I will absolutely be doing that again.

My brain is trying really hard to point me at Currents, so I guess I'm sort of doing Mermay, drawerfic-style? I'll post it if I ever finish enough of it, but it's long and rambly with way, way too much detail about sharks. (And I do mean way too much detail about sharks. I have institutional access to a bunch of academic journals, which means I can include scientifically accurate details about sharks. "Klavier/Daryan mermaid AU" is already a concept with a teeny-tiny audience and with enough research, I can bring that audience down to exactly two people!) It's nice to have something I actively want to write again, even if it's not the fic I was hoping to work on this week.

(Forsaken Road and broken beaten damned are still in progress! Just temporarily backburnered, for a couple reasons; I'll get back to them eventually.)

To-do list for Monday evening:
- Turn off phone
- Make popcorn
- Fold laundry
- Do dishes
- Write 200 words on a fic of my choice
- Pick either a book from the unread stack or a movie from the unwatched stack

Work is being extremely stressful in petty ways I can choose to ignore for a night, but actually doing that is...easier said than done. Thus, to-do lists. You won't get me that easily, work email!

A logo with text that reads Rainbow Book Fair. Below it are six paint-splotch-like circles in the colors of the rainbow.

This weekend, Saturday May 9th, I’ll be in Greenwich Village in New York City with the Rainbow Book Fair! From noon to 6 pm we’ll be at The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center on West 13th St., and there will be readings, panels, a queer poetry marathon, and a bilingual drag story hour. The Rainbow Book Fair is the largest and longest-running LGBTQIA+ book fair in the US, and I’m pretty damn excited to be going for the first time. I hope to see some of y’all there!

For Poetry Monday:

Starblossom’s Song, John Masefield

Queens long ago
Knew sorrowful days,
Seeing their husbands killed,
Their sons destroyed.
Death makes the full heart void,
The cold heart filled,
Those women knew Death’s ways,
I also knew.

Father and mother gone,
He whom I loved, and now
My sons, my lovely sons,
My three bright boys
Killed, while the sunlight shone,
And blossom filled the bough;
I was so happy once
But Death destroys.

Yet, although Death is great,
Earth’s many million tears
Move on the heart of things
Quickening a change to be;
And drop by drop the sea
Moans from its springs,
Its cry will reach God’s ears;
Man has not long to wait.
Death is but a tool of Fate.

This is from Masefield’s 1915 play The Faithful, an adaptation of the Chūshingura story aka legends that developed around the incident of the forty-seven rōnin. By all accounts (I’m certainly not reading the whole thing) it’s reasonably faithful to the plot beats but fails badly at the Japanese culture that drives the characters and story (I mean, “queens”? srsly?). Taken as a Edwardian* lyric divorced from its Japonesme origin, though, I like it.

* Okay, technically Georgian, but I often think of the arts of George V's first years, till the Great War finally started, as Still Edwardian.

Fuming

My family returned to the house yesterday, and today I was surprised by the enormity of the rage and resentment I feel towards them. They hired a cleaning service, and the cleaner emptied the mopping water in the utility area which is where the dishes are (I like the dishes to be kept and washed in the sink, but my family prefers the dishes out in the utility area). The dishes were on the floor near the drain, and the mopping water was emptied on the floor near the drain.

I was telling my grandma that either the dishes have to be kept in the sink or the mopping water has to be emptied somewhere else, and it was a whole stretched-out conversation because my grandma talks over people and I was having to say things over and over to get her to listen. In the midst of this my aunt told me to quieten because they were booking tickets, but I wouldn't have to louden in the first place if they didn't loudly talk over people.

The dishes were washed later, but just the fact that water which is 1) dirty and 2) has floor cleaner in it had swilled around them, is enough to make me anxious about eating.

Oh, and my grandpa asked me whether I'm searching for jobs. I said yes just to fob him off. But it started me raging in my head about how if they want me to do a job so bad they should have supported me when I was offered one.

I recently went to an in-person job interview for a gallery assistant position. They asked me what I was 'expecting' to be paid. I said I had come here with an open mind and asked them what their pay range was; they ignored me. They asked me what my previous salary had been. I told them, and again I asked them what they were paying. Apparently they thought they didn't need to answer any of my questions while expecting me to answer all of theirs. They told me to come for a second in-person interview, and I emailed them saying that I was withdrawing my application because they were refusing to answer any of my questions. They emailed me back saying they were rejecting my application (even though I'd already withdrawn it! lol) because my salary expectations were higher than the budget for the position. The audacity to email me that after refusing to tell me what the budget for the position was! Bald-faced liars, the lot of them. It is amusing that they said 'no we are rejecting your application, you're not withdrawing' because it reminds me of guys who get rejected and then insist that they are rejecting you actually, and they didn't want you anyway.

All of which to say that I've been silently fuming, so here I am verbally fuming instead. Which is an improvement.
