Transcript: Have you thought about producing audiobooks for your anthologies?

Yes, we have. We have not only thought about it, we are working on it. I don’t have the audio rights to most of our anthologies. This is on purpose. I do not request rights in our contracts that I do not expect to use imminently. This protects our authors and gives them more options but it does also make it more challenging when we want to branch out, because then I need to request those rights separately.

Currently, the only book I have the audio rights for – only anthology I have the audio rights for – is Add Magic to taste, which is our first debut anthology with stories cozy stories set in magical tea shops and coffee shops featuring queer characters in relationships that are growing, developing, and changing.

I am contracted with a person to do the audiobook. It should be a work in progress, though we have been having some delays. I also have cards for two other people who have approached me and said, “I do voice recording.” Actually, no – three other people who have approached me and said, “I do voice recording. I would love to do an audiobook if that’s something you’d be interested in.” So, if we continue to have issues with the current set up, I do have options.

The plan is to try to do it on a shoestring. Obviously, the narrator still is gonna get paid. But, you know, to keep it on the less expensive end. Audiobooks are expensive to make, and don’t tend to have a huge audience. Most people who do listen to them get them through a library. And so they’re not money makers. Most people in indie publishing who I know who have done them have lost money, and so I’m trying to get us set up in a way that’s prepared for that, basically. Which is to say I expect to lose money on it, but I still wanna do it.

So, yeah. It’s in progress. Sometimes take way longer than I think they should, and this particular project has had several setbacks. The first narrator we spoke to ended up withdrawing, because they wanted to work on other projects. Like, it wasn’t a dispute, there was no animosity on either party, it was just like, eh, I’m not gonna do this after all. Okay, have a good one, thank you, you know? But, yeah, it’s – we’re working on it. I want it to happen.

Feel free to drop me any asks you might have. I own and operate an indie publisher and I’m here to help. Bye!

A busy, quiet weekend... Friday, after work, I ran a bunch of errands and then settled in. (And slept my face off.) Woke up to storms, but also having annihilated the bedding. Changed the sheets, did a ton of dishes, fussed around... [personal profile] taichara and I are theoretically building MG Tallgeese Fluegel this weekend but I've not gotten mine started quite yet. Mostly finished up a 30MF Knight and have been picking up in general while half-watching the Granblue Fantasy anni stream.

Going to try to actually go through my cassettes and get through my cassettes this time... I wish I was more attached to my old radio shows, but I'm not. You know how some people have a face for radio? I had a voice for print and I sort of wish someone had done me a kindness and pointed this out sooner. So far, on my actual demo tape, I've found one incredibly good cut and that's it. I also found the single for MC Hammer's U Can't Touch This. ^_^ Right now, there's a mix tape I made at a station... So many empty cases, too. At one point, I was finding piles of my cassettes at home among my mother's stuff and I never figured out what she was doing with them.

Sorting through papers, too. I'm finding cards and whatnot from ~xmas and argh, I'm sorry and thank you to everyone who sent things. ^^;;

Xena Fanvids VHS Update!

[personal profile] aurumcalendula
The Xena fanvid VHS arrived safely!

There's 30 fanvids on it (~2 hours of time in total)

Most don't have vidders listed.

I think it might be a mix of VCR and digital vids (there's some with effects and/or fanart included) and I think the tape is from sometime after 2001 (since there's footage of the finale in some vids).

Some (not all) have significant horizontal pink and green lines - I'm wondering if that's from the VHS or the footage in those vids (and/or a result of me initially having the VCR set on LP instead of SP).

I have a DVD-R of it recorded in LP quality and I'm recording one in SP quality.

I was watching [personal profile] killabeez's awesome Special Ops: Lioness fanvid the other day, and now I have a bit of a vidbunny for a different fandom.

Any idea if there's a cover of Can't Help Falling in Love with a similar vibe, but with a male vocalist? (there's a ton of covers of it, but I haven't found one that fits what I'm looking for yet)

I had some good experiences this week (I saw a musical concert and a rock concert and also the blood moon), but it's hard to feel positive when current global events have directly affected our lives. Electricity rates which have already gone up even before the attack on Iran are about to get even higher which sucks because it's been very hot and we haven't even hit full summer (and I'm worried about power shortages on top of that); prices of everything else will also go up with the cost of fuel; job and income are uncertain (already got an advisory, yay!). All that plus a financially dangerous parent. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It super sucks to be in a weak, colonized nation that loses in every single game the global north decides to play. We recently "discovered" a new gas source in my country but how does that help us, really, when we're so powerless in this violent competition for leverage and resources. It's always been a possibility that we'd be next to be attacked. (I mean, historically speaking the US has already destroyed our capital once, less than 100 years ago, out of sheer spite, while writing in our history books that they were our saviors.) Mind you, we're also on the front lines of climate change, while bigger and more developed countries freely generate so much waste, literally ship us their garbage (Canada), and destroy our reefs (China). Btw I avoid fast fashion, trinkets (sorry to local/indie artists, I just can't with all the acrylics), online shopping (too much plastic wrapping), and anything I'll only use once or twice. I actually avoid buying most things because I don't like contributing to waste, I try to minimize A/C use during the day when it's hottest (since I care more about A/C during my sleeping hours) even though I live so close to the damn equator. My city is trying to ban plastic bags so I carry everything in paper bags or my rotation of totes. And for what lol.

WALK THE LINE

Today I went to the cinema to watch Enhypen Walk The Line concert/documentary. The concert is from last summer in Japan in a big stadium. The audience was really amazing, unlike some concerts i've seen (Fate Tour and WTL finale day1 were a bit lame). I loved the atmosphere and you could see the boys had fun too. There were also short interviews where enha shared their thoughts about that concert as well as reflected their goals and development, and of course their love for engene.

Favorite parts
  1. HEESEUNG - it was so shocking seeing him performing on a big screen at the cinema. He's such a good performer and has insane sex appeal. I really felt embarassed because that was one of my top fangirl moments.
  2. PASSION - as i said the interviews opened up about their passion for performing and you could really see it - they are very captivating and that desperate longing and passion is at the core of their performance.
  3. SWEAT - sexy sweaty men singing and dancing....yeah
  4. Jay bias wrecking me - he's such a great singer and i also loved his guitar solo
  5. Lucifer!!! one of my favorite enha songs and performances. Sunghoon, Jay, and Jake in priest outfits being serious. It starts them being still, then walking at at the end they're dancing - i really love how dramatic it is.
  6. XO - the lightsticks were a sea of pink during it, how lovely. It started with Heeseung playing the intro on piano<3 Also one of my favorite enha songs(first one i heard). It's romantic in a magical way.
  7. Bad Desire - such a powerful performance
  8. Shine On Me - from their Japanese EP. It has that hopeful summer feel.
  9. Sunsun waterfight - they literally couldn't stop teasing each other as usual :D
  10. Ending fanchants: Orange Flower and Highway 1009 - this is when i got emotional

The last several days my foot has been extra painful and I have been very grumpy about it. It’s really unpleasant and I would like to stop being grumpy already. But I have been reading things while trying to rest my foot and distract myself so have some thoughts:

Ghost Circus written by Adrienne Kress art by Jade Zhang— MG graphic novel about, what else: a ghost circus. The story here didn’t really grab me, but I loved the art, especially of the circus performances. (content note: ghost kids, child in peril)

Lumberjanes, Vol. 15-20 by Shannon Watters, et al.— I have now read all of the main series of these! There’s still some extra stories and graphic novels to check out, but the main thing feels complete. Vol 19 where the campers decide to do one last thing before the end of camp was especially charming. The ending was a bit rushed but narratively satisfying. This whole series was very good and fun and I’m glad I came back to it and read the second half.

Gotham Academy Second Semester— The second Gotham Academy series. This one is all one long arc where the first one was more episodic. I didn’t like this quite as much as the first series, which I adored. Its a little bit darker and less fun. But I still love Maps and Olive and their friendship. I’m sad there aren’t more of these, but at least there are a few more stories where these characters show up for me to read. (Maps reminds me of very early Tim and I think it would be fun if they hung out, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.)

Batman, Vol. 6: Abyss by Joshua Williamson et al— I read this because it contains a story featuring Maps from Gotham Academy. That story was great! (Well except for the fact that some of the art of Japanese characters was bordering on racist caricature– that was not good at all!) The rest of it wasn’t bad– a little confusing because so much of it referenced other story lines and I have no idea what’s going on in comics this decade.

Kindred Dragons by Sarah Mensinga— A very sweet MG graphic novel about a girl who really wants a dragon egg. She lives in a world where fairies bring some girls dragon eggs – but it mostly runs in families and she isn’t from a “kindred” family. It’s set in Canada which confused me at first, but works for the vibe. The book says “volume 1” very prominently so I was a little worried that it would end on a cliffhanger but it's a complete story.

Transcript: What is the hardest part of putting together an anthology? Is it reviewing pitches, or editing or some third thing?

This is gonna sound like a cheap answer, but the answer is everything. And by that I don't actually mean that every part is the hardest, I mean the hardest part is the totality of it. It's not any one thing, but rather it's keeping track of all of the different parts of it, at least that's what I find hardest. Because it's project management and there's a lot of moving pieces and as the lead editor and the project manager, keeping track of all those pieces is my responsibility. So it's like, I'm not just reviewing pitches. I'm not just editing. I'm not just what was the other one here - well, those were the two example specifics but yeah. I'm not only doing each of those things. Like while I'm editing, I'm also helping figure out what the typeset should look like. I'm helping figure out the cover artist is. I'm communicating with the artist and the other artists doing merchandise. I'm writing out the budget. I'm, you know, I'm communicating with the editors. Like, it's - it's the totality of it that's hard. It's keeping all of the pieces moving at the same pace in the hopes that all of it will end up being ready at about the same time so that we can then crowdfund it.

And I'm not always that good at that. If you ever notice any of our projects getting delayed, it's often - it's most often because I've failed at one part of that or another, and some piece has fallen behind, and I need to catch that one up before I can be ready. So, thank you for asking me that question. If you've got any questions for the owner of an indie press, feel free to drop them my way. I'm Claire from Duck Prints Press. Bye!

summary: The second “bonus” art chapter, collecting ten art pieces added from September 28, 2025-February 5, 2026. This work celebrates the full, good lives Eliot and Quentin shared at the Mosaic. Since I’m going back and adding art as I have time, it didn’t seem fair to those who’d already read prior chapters and might miss it, so I’m now periodically collecting the new art in bonus chapters.
